Extraordinarily tense and deliciously mysterious, Anna Downes's The Shadow House follows one woman's desperate journey to protect her children at any cost, in a remote place where not everything is as it seems.

A HOUSE WITH DEADLY SECRETS.

A MOTHER WHO'LL RISK EVERYTHING TO BRING THEM TO LIGHT.

Alex, a single mother-of-two, is determined to make a fresh start for her and her children. In an effort to escape her troubled past, she seeks refuge in a rural community. Pine Ridge is idyllic; the surrounding forests are beautiful and the locals welcoming. Mostly.

But Alex finds that she may have disturbed barely hidden secrets in her new home. As a chain of bizarre events is set off, events eerily
familiar to those who have lived there for years, Alex realizes that she and her family might be in greater danger than ever before. And that the only way to protect them all is to confront the shadows lurking in Pine Ridge.

I really enjoyed reading this one. I found the book not to only be creepy (there are some parts that literally gave me the chills) but well executed as well. There are a number of major twists and turns going on and readers don’t know which direction it will take making it that much more suspenseful and exciting. I also feel like the underlying message of grief is well thought out and adds to the stories plot.

In my opinion, the only real drawback to this one was that there were too many twists. Truthfully, I DID like them all, but I also think that it was a little too much to process. We have the creepy dolls and old legend, the mysterious woman in the woods, the nasty neighbor who doesn’t care about hurting those in her community, and the second story plot from the past. They do all work together to make the story cohesive but again it was a lot! Sometimes its better to keep things a bit lighter.

In any event I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to reading Anna’s debut. I recommend this one to those who enjoy a suspenseful thriller/mystery.
