If you enjoy a more claustrophobic, gothic thriller then The Sanatorium would be a great book to try! While some parts were a little slow, the buildup of tension was fantastic.

You won't want to leave. . . until you can't.

Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel.

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge--there's something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her.
With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.

Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in. . .

I’ve seen some mixed reviews for this one, so I was on the fence about reading it but I’m really glad I did. With its short, choppy chapters, and slow buildup of tension I found this to be a really good gothic thriller. It has a claustrophobic feel as some of the guests and workers are stuck in the sanitarium turned hotel during a horrible winter storm with a killer on the loose. Everyone’s a suspect of course and until the killer who uses frightening murder techniques is caught. But how many people will be tortured until her or she is?

Sarah Pearse is a great writer, and I was deeply immersed in this one while reading. Sure, it took me a little longer to finish than I would have wanted but I was glued to the pages when I opened the book. A few things I didn’t really care for though is the characters likability (it took me a while to connect with Elin and she came off a little bland in the beginning), and the reasons why the killer did what her or she did. I think the killers reasoning was a bit convoluted to be honest. The author could have kept the reasoning a bit simpler and went in one direction rather than using so many reasons. I think you’ll understand what I mean if you’ve read it. I personally thought it was “too much”.

Other than that, I really liked this one and am looking forward to reading The Retreat when it releases on July 19th.
