The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh is a slower paced murder mystery. While I did enjoy the writing and the clever twist at the end, I found this book to be way too long for what the story was telling.

It's the party to end all parties....but not everyone is here to celebrate.

On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors.

But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year's Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects. The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors,
friends and family—and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead...but who finally killed him.

In a village with this many secrets, murder is just the beginning.

READ MY BOOK REVIEW

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh is a slower paced murder mystery. While I did enjoy the writing and the clever twist at the end, I found this book to be way too long for what the story was telling. I think its because the author added way too many side characters who could have done the deed and all these characters boggled down the actual mystery. It just stopped mattering to be because there were so many people and so many stories within the story to keep up with. Had a few of these side characters been eliminated from the story and we stuck to just a few of the important ones then I think the story would have had more appeal to me. However, I feel like the 400+ pages for this type of murder mystery was just too long.

Will I read the next book in the series? I might! Especially if it isn’t as lengthy as this one because I did enjoy both Ffion and Leo and would love to see how their story progresses from here. I also enjoyed the setting and how descriptive it was. I felt like I was in that icy cold lake while reading!
