This book had its ups and downs for me. Some parts were action packed and exciting while other parts dragged on way too long. I got bored way more than I felt excited.

The mesmerizing adult debut from Leigh Bardugo, a tale of power, privilege, dark magic, and murder set among the Ivy League elite

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug-dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age twenty, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. Their eight windowless “tombs” are the well-known haunts of the rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos
to Wall Street’s biggest players. But their occult activities are more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And, sometimes, they prey on the living.

READ MY BOOK REVIEW

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗣𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗧: This book had its ups and downs for me. Some parts were action packed and exciting while other parts dragged on way too long. I got bored way more than I felt excited.

Ninth House was never on my radar to read. I’ve seen it around but never thought to pick it up because I wasn’t reading fantasy books at the time it was written. But then someone on tiktok approached me and asked if I wanted to buddy read this one, so I decided to give it a try even though I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it (normally I ONLY read books that look good to me, and I was on the fence about this one). BUT I READ IT. I read this book ANYWAY and I feel like I lost HOURS AND DAYS of my life! Not all of it was bad, but it wasn’t great either. I mean this book literally went ON AND ON and never got ANYWHERE. There was so much useless information that filled the pages, and it bored the heck out of me. There were some good parts I’ll say that and there were moments that it got so good that I WANTED to keep reading despite my misgivings, but those moments were few and far in between. The useless information was CONSTANT. It was too WORDY and I felt like there were moments my eyes glazed over everything and I had to go back because I thought I missed some things that I needed to know (I didn’t… I didn’t need to know ANY of it). And despite the horrible writing style and the useless information that was CONSTANTLY dumped in our lap, there were some good things… I liked Alex. She’s fun and feisty and has “could care less about anything” attitude. She’s also a character who comes to life on the pages because of the things that happened in her life. Another good thing? The ending. I wasn’t expecting the twist and thought it was brilliant. Finally, I liked the magic (when it wasn’t overly talked about over and over again in ways we mere mortals couldn’t understand).

So, is the book bad? No. But it’s also not my cup of tea. I think readers should definitely check out other reviews before deciding if this is a book for them or not.
