Read my Book Review

Release Date: January 23, 2018
Genre: MM Romance (it's also very religious)
Actual Rating: 3 stars

Well this book was severely depressing. Give me a second so I can pick my heart up off the floor...

Spoilers Ahead

The Silver Cage is a standalone, MM romance novel. This book has religious aspects (a lot of talk about god and faith), and a main character who is having a hard time coming to terms with his beliefs and emotional/sexual feelings towards men. A lot of Christian people don't believe in homosexuality and think it's a curable "disease" and this is one of the main themes throughout the story. Coming to terms with this proves very difficult for Cal and in the end, it will literally be the death of him.

Gosh this book took the breath right out of me. The author shows exactly what it is like to be so conflicted with ones sexuality which proved both frustrating to me and eye opening. Loving someone, no matter what orientation, should be EASY. You shouldn't have to choose between your love and family. But alas, people do and sometimes it proves to much for the individual and they take it upon themselves to be free of it (in this sense, I mean suicide). I wanted for Cal and Michael to succeed so much more than any characters in any other story I have read thus far. But life isn't clean. No everyone gets their HEA and lives feeling blessed and blissful. If you are reading this book in hopes of an HEA you should find another one because you won't get it here. You will however get an eye opening experience and a ton of heartbreak.

While the bones of this story is phenomenal, I found the execution of the story to be lacking a bit. I never felt a real connection with Cal or Michael. Everything that happened between the two was extremely fast. How does one man who has a live in girlfriend all of the sudden develop feelings for a man he doesn't know? I understand this IS possible and some people will hide their sexual orientation way down deep until one person forever changes their feelings, but the way it is written here made it seem... Unrealistic? It just didn't vibe with me. I understand the authors note sort of discusses this in the end, so maybe is he/she writes Michael's story I will feel differently. For now, I don't feel like it was enough for me to believe it. Perhaps I will come back at a later date and change my rating!

Other than this, the story is solid albeit totally sad. The ending gutted me. It would have been nice if we got a little more of an explanation of feelings from Michael about what went down (it's too quick and open ended for me), but it sure packed a punch!

I honestly DON'T know whether I would recommend this book to fellow readers but if you do decide to read it I recommend going in blind and having a box of tissues on hand.
