THE DAY SHE CRIED BY K. WEBSTER

The Day She Cried is an emotional bully romance. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. I felt some things too rushed and would have liked them to be explored more.
Rating: ★★★
Release Date: October 17, 2017
Genre: YA Bully Romance

Series: None. Complete standalone.
Pages: 286 pages

She was my first love.
She was my first hate.
The very sun in my world tried to burn me alive with her lies and cruelty.
Until I dimmed her light for good…
Or so I thought.

Now she’s back.
Cracked. Broken. Lost.
And for the first time in a long time, I feel free.
Free from our past. Free from my present that suffocates me. Free to destroy her future.

Her misery is my music.
Thrilling. Invigorating. Intoxicating.

For so long, all I’ve done is hate her.
So why do I love her?

Release Date: October 17, 2017
Genre: New Adult. Bully Romance.
Actual Rating: 3 stars

I wanted to love The Day She Cried. I have read so many fabulous reviews for the novel and knew it was right up my alley. The blurb is very vague though, so I didn't know too much going into it, only that there was some sort of bully romance going on between two of the characters. *I freakin LOVE bully romances* -- In this sense, the book was really good. The hero (Rome) is super mean to the heroine (Courtney) and does everything he can to make her life a living hell. He does have a reason for it though, and while I don't condone his actions, I can see WHY he is like this. If you want to know you can read this spoiler... (view spoiler) Aside from the bullying aspect though, I found the book to have some flaws I couldn't look past.

First and foremost, this book has such a strong message and tone. When one is writing a book with such an emotional core it needs to be handled with care and not be rushed. Unfortunately, it IS rushed within the book. One moment the two hate each other because of everything that happened and the next they are in love. It didn't seem realistic in the scheme of things. There should have been a lot more angst, and a hell of a lot more communication to the READER as to why their feelings changed so quickly. I honestly felt like their feelings came out of nowhere and it put a bad taste in my mouth. For me, a story (especially one like this) needs to feel realistic and it unfortunately did NOT.

Secondly, there were jumps in time in a few of the chapters that left me feeling like I missed a huge part of the story that should have been told. For instance, Courtney finally gets into college (which wasn't an wasn't feat by the way (view spoiler), she's had a falling out with Rome for months (about 4-5 to be exact) and he all the sudden comes back and is begging her to take him back? WHY! I needed to see the changes in him in terms of how he went from thinking she was a liar to trusting her again. A small paragraph of an explanation wasn't enough for me (hence, why I felt this part was rushed).

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

Finally, what happened with Courtney's conviction? When the truth finally came out, shouldn't her conviction and felony been overturned? I needed to know! I feel like such a huge chunk of the story was left out (and it's a major part!). I believe it's slightly mentioned, but nowhere near what I would have wanted to know. Again, too rushed.

END SPOILER

I'm truly not trying to pick apart the novel. I love K. Webster and have really enjoyed many of her novels but this one was lacking in so many areas that I could't see past them. I am giving it three stars mostly because the message in the story is VERY strong. It's the execution that needs work in my opinion. Other than this, I recommend reading others reviews as well because so many people loved this book to pieces. It just wasn't a favorite of mine.
