Unfortunately, I didn't like this novel much. I went into it thinking it was a romance but there wasn't enough of it to feel like it fit into the genre. Now, even though I didn't like it much I am curious enough about the series to try book #2.
Rating: ★★
Release Date: May 1, 2018
Genre: New Adult. Romance?
Series: Vincent & Eve #1

Pages: 208 pages
Format: eBook. Purchased.
As the bus approaches my stop on the Lower East Side, I raise the hood of my black sweatshirt. Anonymity is key in my neighborhood—particularly as a lone female walking at night.

All I want is to leave my crime-ridden shadow of a home in New York City. I’ve done everything I can to keep my head down and focus on my studies. College is my only goal; love has never been on the map…
That is, until my sister brings me to an underground fight, where I meet a gorgeous and mysterious man: Vincent.

He is the ghost in my shadows, showing up to feed me pieces of his upper-crust life, then evaporating into darkness until his next visit. I’m falling hard and fast. How can I trust him amidst the depth of his secrets?
Vincent may be even more dangerous than the dark world I’m trying to escape.

Release Date: May 1, 2018
Genre: New Adult (Romance?)
Actual Rating: 2 stars

I am going to be brutally honest in this review, here goes... I didn't like this book. Not even a little bit. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because I like how the author set the book in the slums of New York which is something I have yet to read about in a book. She did a fantastic job at describing the setting and even setting chills up my spine when the heroine had the face the hard times due to the rough neighborhood.. Unfortunately, that's all I appreciated about this book.

First off, this book is supposed to be a romance, correct? Where the heck was the romance? We have a few meet and greets- and possibly love at first sight? I didn't buy into it. Their "relationship" if you can call it that came off as forced and lackluster. I never felt those butterflies that I want to feel when a new couple begins a journey to love- it just wasn't there. I think this book was more of a story about a girl who has a rough life. That's it. Sure, she meets a charming guy whom she falls for almost instantly, but how it happens and the quickness of it all (view spoiler) was unrealistic.

Secondly, the secondary characters were horrendous. Eve's sister is supposed to be a likable character. She is after all, taking care of her little sister and protecting her from thugs in their building. Sounds like a good person right? Well, she herself acts like a wannabe gangster and it turned me off. Their mother? A despicable human being who I wish were never a part of the story to begin with. How and why an intelligent 18 year old deals with that nonsense was mind blowing to me.

Finally, this series is titled Vincent and Eve. Vincent was BARELY a part of this story and I never felt like I was able to get to know him. In romances, I want to feel CLOSE to the hero and heroine and this just didn't happen.

Now, despite my feelings about this book I am actually still going to read the next book because I honestly want to see if it gets better. Perhaps it will? I don't know. But the stories are short enough that if I don't like it I won't feel like it was a total waste of time.

PS: my feelings have nothing to do with the authors work that she put into this story. It simply wasn't my taste in reading material. Many will love it, as the reviews from other readers show.

★★

The Vincent & Eve series

This series is meant to be read in order.
