I knew he was just passing through town for the summer.
I knew he was probably too old for me.
Yet, I was drawn to him.
Not to mention, he tried to save my life when he mistakenly thought I was drowning.
I wanted him and made no secret of it.
His own attempts to warn me away soon gave way to late-night moonlight chats by the lake. We were slowly easing into a friendship that was gearing up to explode into something I might not recover from.
Because he’s leaving at the end of the summer.
And I have no idea what I’ll do when August ends.

When Summer Ends is a good romance. It reads like all the authors other books (she has her own writing style that is identifiable) and incorporates one of my favorite tropes; age gaps . Now, while I did enjoy the story overall, I didn't find it spectacular in any way. This may be a case of "It's not YOU it's ME" as I have been in quite a big book-slump the past couple of weeks, but who knows. Perhaps it's also the fact that all romances are starting to blend together these days... I do love her books though so I am thinking it's my own slump that made me not love it. So please don't let my review stop you from reading it if you want to. It's a good/sweet romance.
As I mentioned, I love an age gap romance. Older men and younger females get me EVERY time. There's something forbidden about it that just gets me going. As for the age gap in this one, readers CAN feel it. It's totally believable in both actions and feelings. While the heroine is more mature than what I picture a 20 year old, she does show her age in mentality. The hero? SWOON! He's 34-35 and has a tough shell. It's not easy for him to give into temptation but he behaves like a grown man and it WORKED. I absolutely loved it!
If you are a fan of Penelope Ward I certainly recommend it. It's not my favorite book in the world but I know it's one I will remember. Perhaps I will give it a re-read in the near future when I'm not feeling so indifferent to the romance genre.
