I thought The Plus One was a really great enemies-to-lovers romcom. However, some of the topics were really heavy which took away from some of my enjoyment.
Rating: ★★★★
Release Date: April 4, 2023
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Series: A Brush with Love #3
Pages: 314 pages
Format: eBook Source: SMP romance.
She’s not looking to fix him. She’s looking to love him, if he’ll let her in.

Some facts are indisputable. The sun rises in the east, sets in the west. Gravity exists. Indira doesn’t like Jude. Jude doesn’t like Indira. But what happens when these childhood enemies find the only thing they can rely on is each other?

On paper, Indira has everything together. An amazing job, a boyfriend, and a car. What more could a late twenty-something ask for? But when she walks in on her boyfriend in an amorous embrace with a stranger, that perfect on paper image goes up in flames.

Jude has nothing together. A doctor that’s spent the last three years traveling the world to treat emergencies and humanitarian crises, a quick trip home for his best friend’s wedding has him struggling to readjust.
Thrust into an elaborate (and ridiculously drawn out) wedding event that’s stressing Jude beyond belief and has Indira seeing her ex and his new girlfriend far more frequently than any human should endure, the duo strike a bargain to be each other’s fake dates to this wedding from hell. The only problem is, their forced proximity and fake displays of affection are starting to feel a bit…real, and both are left grappling with the idea that a situation that couldn’t be worse, is made a little better with the other around.

READ MY BOOK REVIEW

The Plus one is a really well written enemies-to-lovers romance with a small fake dating trope and excellent mental health representation. HOWEVER, the mental health rep was really heavy and took away from what would have been a really funny novel. Don’t get me wrong, I love books that represent various mental health issues as I think it’s important and a great way to spread information to readers BUT I don’t want it to be too heavy in my romcoms. I like to read for an escape and dealing with heavy topics can take away from it for me. Does that mean I didn’t like this one? Not at all! I actually loved the characters, their growth, the way Indira selflessly helped her one-time enemy during a time he needed it most, and the way these two enemies realized that underneath their disdain was a smoldering attraction they didn’t want to admit to. I loved the spicy scenes, the way these two fit together, and of course the amazing secondary characters from previous books. But I would have liked a little more “wedding time” and a little less heaviness (a personal preference).

Would I recommend this one? Absolutely! But I do think it’s important to mention that PTSD plays a big role in the story. Some readers may not want to read about a topic like that.
