An Optimist's Guide to Heartbreak is an emotional childhood best friend's romance. This book is really sad and kept the tears in my eyes almost all the way through. If you enjoy books with a lot of emotion then you can't go wrong with this one.
Rating: ★★★★
Release Date: January 17, 2023
Genre: Emotional Romance.

Series: Heartsong Duet #1
Pages: 294 pages
Format: eBook Source: Kindle Unlimited.
There once was a girl with fireflies in her eyes and music in her soul.

(Remember her... she's important.)

She's the reason I panic-bought the little brick house on Maple Street; the one I lived next door to for eight magical years. Now that I'm back digging up floorboards and lost journals, I can’t stop thinking about the two people who grew up here.

You see, that girl was my best friend, and this house was once hers. She also had a big brother who was my everything before circumstance turned us into nothing more than memories.

That’s why I applied for a job at his auto shop—unprepared to discover that my new boss, Cal Bishop, is now gruff, built, and covered in tattoos.
I'm the sun to his overcast sky. The smile to his surly solitude.

A reminder of everything he longs to forget.

But my heart has a secret, and we’re running out of time to fix our torn pages.

Maybe... the same girl who used to be the glue still holds the key to putting our pieces back together.

(See? I told you she was important.)

Toodles,
Lucy

READ MY BOOK REVIEW

I feel traumatized by this book. There’s so much sadness and feelings of hopelessness spread throughout the story that my heart literally HURT while reading it. And to make matters worse the cliffhanger is a doozy. I can’t stand the thought that I need to wait another 11 days before the conclusion. I’ve never in my life searched for an arc so hard until I met this book. And I can’t even find a signup. I’m so sad 🥺

I don’t want to say much about the plot for this book because it has the potential to spoil the entire duet so I’ll be keeping my review short. First, this is an EMOTIONAL story. Had my husband not been in the same room as me while I binged this in one sitting I would have been sobbing like a baby. So be prepared for tears. Secondly, this book deals with some very sad topics (mainly heart defects). So if things like that bother you then I would skip this book. Thirdly, this book is NOT spicy. Don’t go into it thinking its going to have a ton of sexy scenes or a lot of buildup towards them. It’s very light on spice and will HOPEFULLY have more in the next book. My fingers are crossed for MANY reasons when it comes to this. Finally, this is a great grumpy/sunshine novel. He’s a brooding blue collared mechanic who has no intention of every being in love and she’s an optimist who walks on the clouds with her head held high. Truly, their relationship is the epitome of this trope.

Sound good to you? Then grab this book. Just wait until the second book releases unless you want to feel totally lost like I do. 😂

About the Book:

Within the tangled roots of grief, we stand to lose so much. But no one ever acknowledges what we stand to gain.
Strength. Perspective. Appreciation. Resilience.
And sometimes, every once in a while, if you’re truly lucky…

There is love.

After an emotional cliffhanger, we finally get inside Cal's head and discover his secrets, along with more details of his tragic past, that have been keeping him from Lucy.

A Pessimist's Guide to Love is the final installment of the Heartsong duet, ending in a guaranteed HEA.

BOOK REVIEW

A Pessimist's Guide to Love is a fantastic conclusion to the Heartsong Duet. The first book felt really bleak to me and while this one started a bit the same it ended up being a beautiful love story of hope and redemption. My only complaint is that we didn’t get as much insight as I would have liked when it comes to Lucy’s condition. It’s really glossed over here which was disappointing because it was basically the entire plot to the first book. So, I would have liked to see a little more talk or at least more of an explanation of her life expectancy. Other than that Cal and Lucy’s journey was touching, spicy at times, and really heartfelt. I’m glad I chose to read this one.
If you’re looking for an emotional, childhood best friends’ romance/duet then I recommend this one from Jennifer Hartmann. I read it in one sitting and I don't regret a minute of it.
