Surprise Me is another brilliant read by one of my favorite authors, Sophie Kinsella. When I began reading age appropriate ADULT novels, Kinsellas books where among the first ones I picked up. Years later, I am still a huge fan and am always excited for her to release a new one. One of my favorite things about her books are her characters- specifically, her heroines. Has anyone else noticed how similar they are in the type of voice they have and the way they behave? I sure have. And while this may be a total turn off for some, it is what I look forward to most about her books. In addition to this, each of her novels are widely unique from one another. Kinsella picks topics that are relatable to any woman and turns them into clever and humerus novels. In this one the topic is of marriage and how to keep it going STRONGLY, especially when it is believed that you will have 68+ more years to go...
MORE ABOUT THE STORY
Sylvie and Dan have just hit their 10 year anniversary. How exciting this milestone is, especially in this day and age when divorce rates are sky high. To celebrate, they go to lunch together and then to get medical checkups for their insurance (if anyone here has life insurance, you will know what I mean). Everything is going great- they are both healthy, live appropriate lifestyles, and are slated to be alive until the ripe old age of 102... But wait. Doesn't that mean... They will be married for another 68 years!?!? And there is where the story begins.
Neither Sylvie nor Dan know how to take this news. I mean, being married for a additional 68 years seems like a VERY long time. Right!? How can you keep the marriage alive this long? Maybe each decade they do something different. Like for one decade, date other people. For another, live in South America. Makes sense right? Well, it may be a bit of a stretch so they decide instead to do something a little more tame. Like, surprises every once in a while. But as Kinsella's novels go, these surprises are not going to go as planned. And things will be thrown into the mix that will set their marriage in an upheaval. Will they survive?? You'll have to read to find out!!
I loved, Surprise Me. Everything about it was clever, fun, and a pure joy to read. I love the characters, the interactions, the way things always seemed to go wrong for poor Dan and Sylvie, and their reactions to said things. But most of all, I loved how Kinsella added relate-ability to the story. Women (and men) from all over the world can appreciate how hard marriage can be, and this is cleverly discussed in the novel. There are also emotional sides to the novel that were totally unexpected to me, but enhanced how I already felt about everything. So plain and simple, it's a fantastic book and a must read.
