of the bandmates he betrayed. What's one more?
But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It's the real thing.
And suddenly the suit's previous owner is everywhere: behind the bedroom door . . . seated in Jude's restored vintage Mustang . . . standing outside his window . . . staring out from his widescreen TV. Waiting—with a gleaming razor blade on a chain dangling from one bony hand. .

Release Date: February 13, 2007
Heart-Shaped Box is original and spectacularly creepy. Having read only one of the authors previous books (NOS4A2, recommended) I wanted to see if the originality could be found again- and it was. Now, while I did find the middle of the novel to seriously drag, it doesn't seem to affect my rating because this is one of those books that stays with you long into the night. I couldn't stop thinking about Craddock- the ghost with blackness in his eyes- when I turned out the lights. Even more, going through the stores where all the cute Valentines candy (in heart-shaped boxes) stood on the shelves, I could feel myself slightly shivering. That my friends, is when you know a book is GOOD.
ABOUT HEART-SHAPED BOX
Heart-Shaped Box is a horror novel, a ghost story, and a book of hauntings all rolled into one.
When the novel begins, we meet Jude. He's an aging rockstar who enjoys to collect objects that normal people would stay away from. Some things he has collected in the past include a snuff film where a real murder takes place, a book on cannibalism, and recently, a heart-shaped box that contains a REAL haunted suit. While Jude finds this to be all fun in games in the beginning he quickly realizes that the suit he purchased a absolutely sinister. And the man who wore that suit before he passed is going to make Jude do terrible things before claiming himself...
MY OVERALL THOUGHTS OF THE BOOK
Overall, I really liked this book, although I do wish the middle was a bit more exciting. The novel starts off so strong that one would hope that it would continue throughout the entire novel, but sadly this is not the case. What I wanted more of was Craddock (the ghost) haunting Jude and Georgia, but most of this was taken away from us because they were on the run. So, had it been a bit more exciting I would have given this book a solid 5 stars. In addition to this, I didn't care so much for the ending. I was thinking we would have gotten a huge battle of the souls, but we simply didn't. It kind of just... Stopped. The haunting stopped. And everyone was fine.
Regardless of these things though, I still HAD to give this book at least 4 stars because of how original it is and how damn creepy it starts off. I haven't read anything like it in the last few years (or maybe even EVER) so it deserves to be noticed.
