Where do I start? First and foremost, the blurb for this novel had me so excited that I simply couldn't wait to read it. Normally, if I receive an ARC I try and review it within a month of it's publication but because this sounded so sinister and good, I jumped ahead and read it. Unfortunately, I jumped too fast. This book was nothing close to what I was hoping it would be. I didn't care for the narrator (it alternates between the past and present, where most is told through the voice of Finn), and I thought the fact that the author told the story in three parts took away from the mystery of it all (as the narrators start to change- you'll see what I mean if you read it). Had the author stuck to Finn as the narrator, I think it would have been much more chilling and much more interesting. Although, maybe not because I didn't care much for him anyway! Anyway, while it only took me a day to read this one, I found a lot of it to be quite boring. I guess I felt like I just wanted to hurry up and read it so I wouldn't have to look at it again. So why give a book you didn't care for 3 stars, you may ask? Because I freakin LOVED the twist. I get goosies just thinking about it! I found the twist be be original, unexpected, and chilling.
After reading the reviews of others and writing my own, I think it's fair to say that you are going to either love this book or hate it. There really is no in between unless you have a rating scale/thoughts like I do (especially when it comes to the twist). So read it or not- you'll have to decide whether the narrator is mediocre, reliable vs. unreliable, etc. and whether this is a book for you.
