Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion. In the vein of The Couple Next Door, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

I am so disappointed in this book. I was really looking forward to reading it because I have heard such great things about it from fellow readers but there was nothing remotely satisfying about it. Had the author taken the time to give more background, or even made one of the characters interesting or likable then it would have been better. But none of this happened. It kind of felt like I started reading the middle of a book rather than from start to finish. Readers are thrown into a relationship between two people (neither of whom are likable in the slightest) and watching them crash and burn. It felt weird. This could have been a great book. It has all the pieces but they are not put together properly and most of what would make the story GOOD was missing. :(
I can't remember a time when I ever gave a book only one star. Unfortunately, I have no choice but to give this one that rating. It's boring, moves too fast without any information leading up to the stuff that is/has been going on between these two people, and has some of the blandest characters I have ever read about. The unreliable narrator, which is normally something I love, was ridiculous. I feel like he was taken straight out of a Caroline Kenpes novel but without the excitement and likability. The heroine, who readers are supposed to sympathize with, was kind of a placeholder in the story. She wasn't built up (neither were actually) and I didn't feel bad for her OR her situation in the slightest. Ugh. I just didn't like this one AT ALL.
I want to point out here that it is not my intention to rip this novel apart and be mean. I am simply giving my honest opinion about the BOOK. I simply think if the author took more time with the story and built these characters up a bit more that it would have been a much more interesting read. It's just sorely lacking this... I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one and got it when it was on sale.
