A devastating and raw novel about the hurtles of marriage and what it takes to overcome them. Colleen Hoover, no matter how much this book gut me and left in a heaping pile of tears, you are a genius. You tackle emotional issues that affect millions of people within your novels and do so with poise and grace. You make your characters relatable, real, and purposeful. There hasn't been one yet that hasn't touched my heart in the most beautiful ways and I can't see you writing a book with hags in them anyway. I love this book. It touched me to the bottom of my soul and made me feel things that I never knew I could. Readers, this book, as heartbreaking and emotional as it is, is a must read. You will cry (have tissues and lots of wine and chocolate at hand), you will feel deeply, and then you will smile. This book is fantastic. And of course, I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't already raced through the book- I know, it's hard not to drop everything and read a Colleen Hoover books once it's published. One thing I will say, I am glad Colleen only publishes about one book a year because if she wrote more, I don't think my tender little heart could handle it. Bravo!
Possible Spoilers Ahead
This book is about infertility and the breakdown of a marriage because of the hopelessness that comes with it. Many women face this issue and I think Colleen handled this couples story with a lot of care. If you relate to this issues, this book may even help you. Sure, it's sad to think about living through it must be one of the most horrible pains any woman can face, but the has some good advice as spoken through her characters voice that may help you find peace. I say this because my husband and I have struggled to become pregnant since out marriage. I am thankful everyday that I have a 10 year old from a previous relationship, but it still hurts me not to be able to give my husband his own biological child. That said, I think this book really allowed me to see that one (and a couple of course) can still have a wonderful and fulfilling life whether they have children or not.
Anyway, this book is a bit different from Colleen's other books as it focuses on married couple rather than a couple who are just meeting and falling in love. However, the past and present are apparent in this book because she tells the story in alternating time frames (then and now) which made the book so much better than it would have been had it only been told in the present. Readers will not only learn of the struggles and how it effects their relationship in the present, but also how they met and fell in love in the past.
End Possible Spoilers
With that, this is a beautiful and emotional novel that touched me to the depths of my soul. I loved how the book played out and how everything came together in the end. I shed a lot of tears while reading, but I also felt my heart fill with empathy and joy for these characters. It's one of those books that you don't want to miss this summer.
