I must admit that I purchased a copy of this book based on the cover. It’s so cute and gives off Christmas vibes which is exactly what I was looking for- a Christmas novel. Not only that, I saw a few people posting about it on Instagram and thought that if they liked it, I would too. Thankfully, I was right!
25 Days ’Til Christmas by Poppy Alexander is a sweet novel about a single mother who is having a hard time during the holiday season. Her husband passed four years ago and since then she’s been living in a fog. Wanting to make this Christmas special for her little boy Jack she decides to use an advent calendar with special surprises in it that she can do with her son leading up to Christmas. For the most part, it works well. She’s not only spending time with her pride and joy but she’s beginning to feel somewhat alive again. That is until things start to take a turn for the worse. First her job causing her problems. Will she have it by the end of the year? Who knows? Then her son is being persecuted at school for not being “normal” (as they say). Then, her grandmother in law with Alzheimer’s, may not have the care she needs because they want more money from Kate (the MC). What’s a girl to do? Kate may be in a tough spot this holiday season but with a little help from friends and some faith things just may work out in the end.
Some may be wondering why I chose to give this book 4 stars rather than 5 since I loved it so much. This was hard for me because while I did LOVE the story as a whole, it was much bleaker than I thought when I first purchased. When I look at the cover, I think the book will be an airy, light, and fun holiday read. However, the book deals with many serious issues and at some points was rather depressing to read. I felt for Kate really, I did but there was SO MUCH DRAMA in her life. It was a little overkill. Then when everything suddenly looked up for her, the story ended. I felt like I needed a little more because of all that drama.
In any event, I’m glad I took a chance on a new author and look forward to reading more books by Poppy in the future. If you’re looking for a holiday read, this is a nice one just be prepared for a lot of soul searching within the characters and some dreary and sad times.
