Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis
player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

“One of the most anticipated [books] of the year—and rightfully so. . . . It’s a must-read.”--Parade

This book almost left me speechless (almost). I mean, I can certainly gush about how amazing and exquisitely written Malibu Rising is, but how do you put into words just how MOVING and intimate it feels? I don’t know if my review can even do justice, but I’ll try…

Taylor Jenkins Reid has always been an incredible writer. Most of her books are 5 star read for me (and many other readers). She stands out because she writes about subjects we don’t see too often. She doesn’t write overused plots, her characters are lifelike, and her stories are emotional and compelling. Malibu Rising is all of this and more. The story feels intimate because we are literally watching the Rivas lives as they grow and overcome tragedy that seemingly surrounds them (a famous dead-beat dad, a mother who can barely make ends meet and has a tragedy of her own, and teenagers trying to just stay afloat and be together). The story is compelling because it gives us an inside look at the rich and famous as they were in the 50’s and 80’s and of a family in trouble (in so many ways). And most of all, the story is a powerhouse of a novel because Reid LITERALLY transports her readers back in time making us not only feel as if we are a part of the decades that focused on the Rivas lives but because we feel as if we too are one of them.

This book tells an incredibly beautiful story about a family of four who make their way out of the ashes. It was an unexpected surprise for me as it took me in a different direction than I anticipated but I wouldn’t want anything to change. I loved it immensely.

Readers, I won’t give away the plot because I think it’s important to live vicariously through the characters in this story, but I will say that it’s an absolute must read. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a wonderful writer and should not be missed.
