Rating: ★★★★
Release Date: July 13, 2021
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Series: It Happened One Summer series #1 (stand alone)
Pages: 419 pages
Format: Paperback. Source: Purchased.
Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who’s cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar... in Washington.

Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her
stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.

Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

READ MY BOOK REVIEW

𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪 𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗣𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗧: It Happened One Summer is the perfect beach read and exactly what I was looking for in terms of a lighter, funnier romance. I’m so excited to see what happens with Piper’s sister in the next book!

It Happened One summer is the quintessential beach read. I read it cover to cover (all 385 pages) in one sitting while in my pool on a hot 95-degree day. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. There’s just something about a sexy bearded fisherman that KNOWS what he wants and GOES AFTER IT that made me fall in love with this novel. I also enjoy the fish out of water trope and seeing someone who never had to care for herself be forced to do so in another state was quite fun to read about. There were a few small things that kept me from loving this one (see below) but for the most part I found this to be a sweet, fun, SEXY, read. I’m really excited to read Hook, Line, and Sinker when it comes out next year. I think it’ll be the perfect companion novel to this one as it features Hannah and Fox (Piper’s sister and Brendan’s friend/fellow fisherman).

So, what is it that kept me from really loving this one? I think it’s because Piper never felt like the spoiled rich girl she’s described as. In the beginning BEFORE she moves to Westport, I could see it. However, when we see here THERE, I see nothing about her that screams a rich ditz (as she aptly described as she was being dumped). Had she acted a bit more airheaded or something like that then I would have believed her to be the kind of girl she’s described as in the novel, but it just wasn’t there. Other than that, I enjoyed this one immensely.

If you’re in the mood for a lighter read with a good number of SEXY times then I recommend this one. There were a ton of moments where I laughed out loud and had a big smile on my face. I know many other readers will feel the same.
